A new group of characters could easily pick up the cause. While the main characters of Person of Interest were integral to the story, they were not necessary for the premise. More than a few central characters didn't survive the series finale however, Season 5, Episode 11, "Synecdoche" introduced a second Team Machine, and the series finale "return 0" all but explicitly stated that The Machine would continue her mission. Television, the series aired on CBS - and with the streaming wars on the horizon in 2016, that business arrangement no longer made sense for CBS. That heartless and dark version of Super AI did show up however, its role was to stand in contrast to how The Machine cares for humanity.ĭespite critical excellence and passable ratings, it was the changing face of technology that canceled the show. They risked their lives - and sometimes even more - in service of doing a simple, pure good. Yet, at its heart, it was a story about a group of broken people showing up in the nick of time to rescue someone. There were times that Person of Interest got incredibly bleak. The show dove deep into the issues surrounding surveillance, “good” guys and “bad” guys, what makes a hero and what happens when the hero fails. Sure, it’s a mixture of how she was programmed and who did the programming, but this Super AI is simply "good." What makes Person of Interest unique is that it dares to ask what if the Super AI loves humanity? The Machine is a full-fledged character in her own right. The fear around Super AI is that it will eventually determine that humans are irrelevant and must be destroyed. Since the idea of artificial intelligence ( or the lack thereof) first dawned in the imaginations of storytellers, it's become synonymous with emotionless machines.
